In a mixed type chemical rotary kiln, the combustion process of solid fuel includes drying, preheating, combustion, and burnout.

In the first stage, when the fuel moves downwards in the preheating zone, it is heated to the ignition temperature. The preheated air brought by the cold cutting enters the lower part of the calcination zone and begins to come into contact with the fuel, and combustion takes place in the calcination zone. The excess air coefficient in the lower part of this zone is relatively large, while the block size of the fuel in the upper part is not close to 1.0 or even less than 1.0, which directly affects the combustion speed and thickness of the calcination zone

To ensure that the material has sufficient residence time during calcination, there are certain requirements for both fuel and material fragmentation. Therefore, if the fuel block is too small and the combustion speed is fast, the high-temperature zone is too concentrated, and the material stays in the high-temperature zone for too short, the main reaction during calcination cannot be carried out in time, which affects the calcination quality. However, if the fuel block is too large, the combustion speed slows down, the combustion zone elongates, causing lack of concentration of firepower, reducing the temperature of the calcination zone, and shortening the cold cutting zone accordingly, affecting the quality of the clinker and increasing heat consumption. In addition, if the fuel block is too large, the ash content is too concentrated, and the fuel quality is reduced. The block size of commonly used coke in production is 35-40mm. Anthracite has a much smaller surface area per unit mass than coke and a slower combustion rate, so its block size is smaller than that of coke
